Introduction

The architectural landscape in Aartselaar, Belgium, welcomes a groundbreaking addition with the completion of the University building by WE-S architecten. Designed with innovation and functionality in mind, this structure redefines the concept of educational spaces. The program of demands for the project includes four identical nursery classes, a multifunctional hall, a refectory, storage facilities, a kitchen, a staff room, and a nursery.

A Unified Approach to Nursery Classes

To meet the demands effectively, the architects proposed a unique approach. The four nursery classes were combined in pairs, positioned back to back. Each class was equipped with its storage room and sanitary facilities. This arrangement aimed to optimize space and functionality while ensuring the individual needs of each class were met.

Centralized Design Around Polyvalent Hall

A distinctive feature of the design is the organization of classes around a central, polyvalent hall. This layout not only contributes to a particularly compact building but also establishes a direct link between all classes and the multifunctional hall. The inclusion of a refectory within this hall enhances its versatility, creating a cohesive and interconnected educational space.

Strategic Site Placement and Outdoor Integration

Situated on the east side of the site, the building takes on a nine-cornered volume shape, strategically opening towards the entrance. This design choice not only provides an intriguing form but also incorporates an outdoor playroom, enhancing the overall learning environment.

Compact Efficiency with Playful Form

The result is a compact and efficient building that seamlessly fits within the site’s boundaries. Despite its playful and innovative form, the architects successfully navigated the challenge of arranging the structure within the limited confines of the site.

Conclusion

The University building in Aartselaar stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of innovative design and functional efficiency. By reimagining the organization of nursery classes, centralizing spaces around a polyvalent hall, and strategically placing the building on the site, WE-S architecten has created a structure that not only meets the program requirements but also adds a playful and dynamic element to the educational landscape. This project serves as an inspiration for future developments, showcasing the possibilities of compact and creatively designed educational spaces.
