Among these projects is the transformation of San Agustín, a quaint village with a population of 450, where a participatory process identified the rural square as a prime candidate for intervention.

Originally, the site served as a crossroads, offering a sense of centrality within the vast rural landscape. However, it lacked the characteristics of a typical town square. Constrained by limited resources, the intervention focused on the square’s periphery, resulting in the creation of a continuous loop without sharp corners. This circular promenade encourages leisurely strolls, embracing the rural tradition of observing others while enjoying a walk. Adhering to the existing topography, the design respects the natural geography, resonating deeply with the local community.
Design Strategy: Enhancing Connectivity and Green Spaces
The design strategy of the San Augustin Rural Square project revolves around maximizing connectivity and integrating green spaces into the fabric of the village. A perimetral sidewalk delineates the square’s boundaries, creating a 250-meter loop for pedestrians. At the heart of the square lies a central circular area paved with bricks, serving as a focal point for children’s play activities. Surrounding this focal point are six circular vegetal areas, featuring indigenous plants and flowers, providing defined green spaces that require minimal maintenance.
