Introduction

In the industrial town of Dongguan, China, Zhutao Architecture Design Studio introduces the innovative “Super Link” project, aimed at rejuvenating urban development in Chang’an. This venture explores the synergy of space, industry, and system, seeking new momentum for the town’s evolution.

Site Strategy: Linear Community

The project begins with the transformation of old factory areas into an innovation park. Along North Lianfeng Road, a continuous 300-meter urban interface is created to activate the surrounding area, connecting community amenities and revitalizing the entire Innovation Park.

Design Elements: Point-Line-Plane

The project employs a “Point-Line-Plane” spatial structure, emphasizing gateways and connections. Open corridors and stairs establish a 3D pedestrian network, while major gateways serve as urban nodes, facilitating movement and spatial flows within the Innovation Square.

“Line”: Roof Canopy and Corridors

A steel canopy, adorned with orange terracotta and glazed tiles, unites street-front buildings, resembling a “flying carpet” to reflect the town’s cultural identity. Street corridors enhance communal connections and unify diverse façades, fostering a cohesive streetscape.

“Point”: Open Entrance and Gathering Park

Primary public spaces include entrances and the Gathering Park, designed to facilitate multi-directional access and three-dimensional flow. Open stairs and commercial activities activate pedestrian lanes, enhancing connectivity and vibrancy.

Dialogue between New and Old

The project engages in a dynamic dialogue between new constructions and existing structures. By integrating new elements with unfinished old buildings, such as grounding steel columns systematically, the project honors the site’s history while injecting fresh energy into the urban fabric.

Harmonizing Design Elements

New façades complement old textures, with tile wrapping and subtle differences in paving patterns distinguishing between old and new. Modular grid paving extends into the innovation park, occasionally transforming into seating and walkways, creating a unified and vibrant urban environment.

In essence, the Super Link project redefines Chang’an’s urban landscape, blending history with innovation to create a dynamic and engaging space for residents and visitors alike.
