Designed by Studio Evren Başbuğ, Kinik Olive stands as a beacon of industrial innovation within the tranquil landscapes of Kinik, Turkey. Operational since November 2023, this small-scale industrial complex, nestled amidst olive groves, boasts a daily processing capacity of 80 tons of olives and can produce up to 20 tons of olive oil.
Harmonizing Architecture with Environment
The architectural vision behind Kinik Olive emphasizes integration with the natural surroundings. Contrary to traditional industrial structures, the building features a single-volume space elevated on a steel structural system. Its distinctive reverse-sloping roof and angular façade design ensure it stands out amidst the olive trees, while still blending harmoniously with the rural landscape.
Aesthetic and Functional Design
Galvanized trapezoidal coating panels adorn the façade and roof, reflecting sunlight and mirroring the colors of the sky and surrounding olive trees. Despite its modern appearance, the structure seamlessly merges with the environment, appearing almost transparent in color and texture, and occasionally disappearing into the landscape.
Simplified Construction for Sustainability
The design prioritizes simplicity and cost-effectiveness, utilizing a minimal variety of materials both internally and externally. Local labor was predominantly employed for manufacturing and installation, further enhancing the project’s sustainability and economic impact. With a construction cost of approximately 3,300,000 TRL ($167,000), Kinik Olive exemplifies efficient resource utilization.
Contributing to the Circular Economy
Kinik Olive, in collaboration with a nearby milk processing facility, symbolizes the cooperative’s commitment to the local circular economy. By processing locally sourced olives, the facility adds value to the community’s agricultural products, fostering economic growth and sustainability for local producers.
In essence, Kinik Olive embodies the synergy between industry and nature, showcasing how thoughtful architectural design can enhance both functionality and environmental harmony within a rural landscape.
