A Fusion of City and Campus
Fontys Hogescholen’s Rachelsmolen Campus in Eindhoven underwent a remarkable transformation from a secluded campus to a vibrant learning hub. The collaborative effort of Barcode Architects, Nudus, Okra landscape architects, and Hollandse Nieuwe resulted in a master plan that seamlessly integrates the campus with the surrounding cityscape.
Creating Unity Through Diversity
Rather than a single monolithic structure, the new campus features three distinct buildings spread across the site. This decentralized approach encourages interaction and cross-pollination among different programs and institutes. Positioned to blend harmoniously with existing structures and the landscape, the buildings enclose a green, inviting public space—a hub for student and faculty interaction.
Building R11: Bridging Interior and Exterior
At the heart of the campus stands Building R11, a central hub housing communal facilities like restaurants, libraries, and lecture halls. With its dual-faced design, R11 serves as a bridge between the campus and the adjacent residential area. Its transparent façade invites interaction, while reflective cladding establishes a dialogue with its surroundings.
Building R12: Balancing Accessibility and Privacy
Building R12 caters to hands-on education, featuring specialized facilities for medical training and treatments. Open to the public yet mindful of privacy, the design prioritizes accessibility through an inviting atrium and extensive windows. Private spaces are strategically located to ensure the comfort and safety of students and patients.
Building R13: A Campus Showcase
R13 serves as both a campus showcase and a vital link to the city. Its striking design, highlighted by a unique staircase and grandstand, invites engagement with lush greenery and doubles as an open-air theatre. By seamlessly integrating architectural elements with the natural environment, R13 enhances accessibility and connectivity.

Through thoughtful planning and design, the campus fosters collaboration, creativity, and community, redefining the boundaries between learning and the surrounding urban fabric.
