Introduction

Mbalamwezi School, located in Arusha, Tanzania, stands as a testament to collaborative efforts in creating sustainable educational infrastructure. Designed by Sebastián Silva Zunza Arquitecto (SSZA) and realized in 2021, this project embodies innovation and community engagement.

Addressing Educational Needs

The initiative for Mbalamwezi School stemmed from a collaboration with the NGO Kutembea, following SSZA’s triumph in an architecture competition in January 2018. Situated south of Arusha in a burgeoning neighborhood, the school aims to meet the growing demand for educational and childcare facilities in the area.

Architectural Design

The architectural design revolves around three pavilions arranged around a central courtyard. Each pavilion serves distinct functions, catering to the diverse needs of the educational institution.

Pavilion Layout

  1. Pavilion One: Positioned strategically to shield against prevailing winds, this pavilion houses essential amenities such as dining areas, kitchens, storage rooms, and a shop. The shop not only offers products made in the kitchen and garden produce but also serves as an additional source of income.
  2. Pavilion Two: Serving as the main facade facing the street, this pavilion accommodates administrative offices, children’s dormitories, bathrooms, and staff rooms. The layout ensures a separation between administrative functions and the daily activities of the children.
  3. Pavilion Three: This pavilion encompasses classrooms, an open space, and bathrooms, defining the central meeting plaza and garden area. The spatial arrangement facilitates a seamless flow between different activities within the school premises.

Sustainable Construction

A cornerstone of the project is its commitment to sustainable construction practices. Before commencing construction, a comprehensive survey of local materials and construction methods was conducted in collaboration with the local builder, Asantely. Two types of locally produced bricks were selected for the project, emphasizing both durability and aesthetic appeal.

Environmental Considerations

The environmental sustainability of Mbalamwezi School is evident in its design and infrastructure. The roofing structure, composed of pre-painted zinc-coated sheets supported by a metallic truss system, not only ensures durability but also facilitates rainwater harvesting. A 100,000-liter cylindrical tank collects rainwater for garden irrigation and other purposes, promoting water conservation. Furthermore, the school is powered primarily by solar energy, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and long-term sustainability.

Community Engagement

The construction of Mbalamwezi School was a collaborative effort involving local workers, NGO partners, and volunteers from across the globe. This inclusive approach not only fostered skill transfer but also strengthened community bonds. Presently, the school is fully operational, catering to the educational needs of the local population. Plans are underway to further expand the facility, reflecting its importance as a beacon of education and sustainability in Arusha, Tanzania.
