Introduction to the Project
In Beirut, Lebanon, the architecture firm PARALX, which operates in both the Middle East and the United States, has made significant contributions to the Beirut Digital District (BDD). This newly developed commercial area is dedicated to Lebanon’s growing digital and creative economy.
BDD 1227: A New Workspace Concept
The first major project, BDD 1227, comprises a series of new office buildings designed to cater to the needs of companies within the Beirut Digital District. These buildings feature indoor-outdoor workspaces and are adjacent to the newly rebuilt central district. BDD 1227, certified as LEED Gold, adds over 194,000 square feet (18,032 square meters) of office space across a 4.44-acre (1.8-hectare) site surrounded by 19th-century structures. The design by PARALX draws inspiration from its historical location on Beirut’s former Green Line, which divided the city during the civil war from 1975 to 1990.
Restoring St. George Church
The second major project involves the restoration of Saint George Church, a 19th-century structure located between the two buildings of BDD 1227. PARALX was responsible for creating 26,000 square feet (2,415 square meters) of public outdoor space and a parking garage beneath the church to connect the two buildings without damaging the historic edifice. The firm also designed a unique roof for the church, featuring parametrically designed truncated pyramids that channel natural light into the interior, reflecting traditional Lebanese church ornaments.
The Design Competition and Master Planning
PARALX secured the project through an invited design competition for the northern office building. During the early design phase, an agreement was reached with St. George Church, the owner of the southern site, to add another building and renovate the church. PARALX also oversaw the master planning of the Beirut Digital District, which includes residential units, hotels, entertainment venues, retail spaces, and additional office buildings to support the expanding BDD community.
Sustainable Design and Leadership
Founded in 2010 by Lebanese-American architect Karim Moussawer, PARALX led all phases of this major urban development. The project emphasizes sustainable design strategies, earning LEED Gold certification ahead of its completion. Local photographer Wissam Chaaya documented the architecture and interiors, capturing the essence of this modern yet historically conscious development.
Conclusion
The BDD 1227 and St. George Church projects by PARALX represent a significant step in blending modern workspace design with historical preservation in Beirut. By incorporating sustainable practices and respecting the city’s rich heritage, PARALX has created a space that fosters growth and creativity within Lebanon’s burgeoning digital and creative sectors.
