Bureau de Change Architects has unveiled their latest creation: a vibrant studio space for Black Kite, an independent visual effects and design studio nestled in East London. Drawing from the site’s rich industrial history, the architects have sculpted a series of intersecting cylinders, weaving together a narrative of past and present.

Spatial Configuration

The design narrative is deeply rooted in the industrial legacy of the site, once home to an Engineers and Iron Foundry. Embracing this heritage, the architects envisioned a spatial strategy reminiscent of traditional iron kilns, manifested as a composition of intersecting circles. Each cylinder houses production, editing, and color suites, carefully shielded from external disturbances to foster a focused working environment.

Interplay of Volumes

The intersecting cylinders give rise to undulating external surfaces, punctuated by carved-out cavities at intervals. These semi-private breakout spaces serve as transitional zones, blurring the boundaries between enclosed working areas and open-plan zones. Finished with natural clay plaster, these cavities juxtapose the sleek geometry of the cylinders with warm, textured surfaces, creating a dynamic interplay of forms and materials.

Central Social Core

At the heart of the studio lies a vibrant social hub, anchored by a kitchen clad in stainless steel to reflect light and serve as a focal point for interaction. Handmade glazed ceramic tiles adorn the curved countertop, infusing the space with tactile warmth and character. Carefully curated furniture activates the environment, fostering a sense of homeliness and comfort amidst the industrial backdrop.

Seamless Connectivity

The layout of the office transcends conventional boundaries, offering a fluid continuum of spaces that adapt to the diverse needs and preferences of its occupants. From enclosed workstations to open-plan collaborative zones, the design encourages exploration and interaction, weaving together a tapestry of experiences within a singular, cohesive framework.

In essence, the Black Kite Offices epitomize the transformative power of architecture, where history converges with innovation to create a dynamic and inspiring workspace. Through its thoughtful spatial configuration and material palette, Bureau de Change Architects have crafted a studio that not only honors the site’s industrial past but also fosters creativity, collaboration, and community.
