A Vision of Sustainability

Facundo Ochoa, lead architect at NODO Arquitectura + Naturaleza, embarked on a mission to revolutionize construction methods, driven by a vision of sustainability and adaptability. Departing from traditional wet construction techniques, Ochoa sought to create a detachable construction system that could be assembled without the use of power tools.

The Birth of KABINA

The inspiration for KABINA arose from Ochoa’s desire to cater to the needs of the nomadic generation, envisioning a solution that could seamlessly integrate into various settings, from tourism to home offices. Rejecting the notion of real estate as permanent fixtures, Ochoa envisioned a system where structures could be relocated or resold like furniture, embodying true sustainability.

Prototype Development

The journey to develop the KABINA prototype was fraught with challenges, including financial constraints and technological limitations. However, during the pandemic quarantine in 2020, Ochoa seized the opportunity to explore the potential of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) technology in collaboration with his carpenter friend, Nicolás Urien.

Innovating with CNC Technology

Drawing inspiration from Japanese joinery techniques, Ochoa and Urien reimagined the KABINA system to leverage CNC technology for precision manufacturing. The system features intricately designed joints and a mechanical structure that opens akin to a compass, enabling rapid assembly and disassembly without the need for conventional fasteners.

Form and Function

The distinctive curved roof of KABINA serves both aesthetic and practical purposes, blending harmoniously with natural surroundings while doubling as the ridge of the roof. Door windows are integrated as design elements, seamlessly connecting the interior with the external environment and fostering a sense of immersion in nature.

Future Endeavors

Continuing to refine their design, Ochoa and his team are exploring various shapes, sizes, and functionalities for KABINA, including modules for bathrooms and kitchens. With plans to expand operations to Uruguay and other Latin American countries by 2024, NODO Arquitectura + Naturaleza aims to unlock the full potential of the KABINA construction system, ushering in a new era of sustainable and adaptable architecture.
