Embracing Comfort and Community

Nhoow Architects crafted the Judo Espresso Dojo, a 26-square-meter coffee shop nestled in Chengdu’s old urban area, with a vision of fostering comfort and camaraderie. Inspired by the ethos of Judo, as depicted in the movie “Throw Down,” the cafe seeks to emulate the discipline’s essence of resilience and belonging. Named after the philosophy that “Judo teaches you to fall,” the space aims to provide a welcoming ambiance where patrons can feel at ease and discover their own paths within the realm of “Judo.”

Unveiling the Essence: Raw Beauty

In a departure from conventional aesthetics, the design celebrates rawness and authenticity. Resembling a construction site office or a hidden alley, the cafe eschews superficial adornments in favor of revealing its structural underpinnings. Walls stripped of ceramic tiles expose the bare essence, while glass magnesium fireproof boards adorn the interior. Gangboards repurposed from construction sites form the flooring, underscoring the cafe’s commitment to industrial charm.

Minimalist Elegance: Design Philosophy

Nhoow Architects embrace minimalist elegance, opting for simplicity and functionality over ostentation. Furniture crafted from aluminum profiles and paint-free boards exude understated sophistication. Eschewing traditional signboards, the entrance proudly displays the rectangular tube keel, embodying the cafe’s ethos of honesty and transparency.

Artistry in Every Detail

The door curtain, a collaboration with fashion designer Wang Yuanyuan, serves as a testament to the cafe’s commitment to artistry and innovation. Translucent film adorned with air holes and polyester braided rope offers flexibility and functionality, enabling users to adapt to seasonal changes seamlessly. This thoughtful integration of design elements not only enhances functionality but also elevates the cafe’s aesthetic appeal.

Cultivating a Sense of Belonging

At its core, the Judo Espresso Dojo Cafe is more than just a place to enjoy coffee; it’s a sanctuary for community and self-discovery. By embracing authenticity and simplicity, Nhoow Architects have created a space where patrons can unwind, connect, and find solace in the midst of urban chaos. As the translucent film envelops the interior, casting a warm glow, patrons are invited to embark on their own journey of self-exploration and renewal within the comforting embrace of the dojo.
