Located in the heart of New York City’s Flatiron District, the offices of Sandbox Films, a renowned documentary production company, embody a harmonious blend of historical elegance and modern functionality. Designed by Civilian Projects and completed in 2023, this 4,200 sq ft space redefines the concept of a workplace, incorporating elements inspired by classic cinema and contemporary design.

Fusion of Art and Functionality

Civilian Projects collaborated with Sandbox Films to create a workspace that seamlessly integrates creative and technical aspects of filmmaking. Drawing inspiration from the grandeur of early movie houses and Art Deco cinemas, the design pays homage to the rich history of cinema while embracing modern amenities.

Thoughtful Interior Layout

The office layout revolves around a central reception area and bar, serving as a dynamic hub for both work and social gatherings. Rows of marquee lights illuminate the space, evoking the ambiance of a classic movie theater. A custom-designed seating area features luxurious boucle and velvet sofas, providing a comfortable setting for informal meetings and events.

State-of-the-Art Screening Room

At the heart of the space lies the Dolby Atmos screening room, equipped with cutting-edge sound technology and customized seating for an unparalleled viewing experience. Acoustic dampers and reverberators ensure optimal sound quality, while discreet built-in table lights offer adjustable lighting for various screening events.

Functional Workspaces

The office incorporates private and open offices, editing suites, and a conference space, seamlessly connected by mint green acoustic sliding doors. Custom-designed meeting tables and ergonomic workstations enhance productivity, while vintage furniture pieces add character to the workspace.

Integration of Historical Elements

The design respects the historical significance of the landmarked neo-gothic skyscraper housing the offices. Structural columns adorned with travertine cladding serve as visual anchors, delineating public and private areas within the space.

Promoting Collaboration and Community

Beyond serving as a workspace, Sandbox Films’ offices function as a cultural hub for New York’s nonfiction film community. With a focus on fostering collaboration and cultural exchange, the space hosts screenings, events, and a residency program for independent filmmakers.

The Sandbox Films offices represent a harmonious fusion of historical charm and contemporary design, offering a welcoming environment that inspires creativity and fosters community within the vibrant landscape of New York City’s Flatiron District.
