Embracing Wine Tourism
In response to the burgeoning wine tourism industry in Italy, historic wineries are expanding their facilities to accommodate visitors. The Cantina Gorgo, nestled amidst the scenic hills of Lake Garda in Custoza, is one such destination. With its 53 hectares of organic vineyards, it attracts tourists seeking a holistic wine-tasting experience amid picturesque landscapes.
A Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
The owners of Cantina Gorgo approached Bricolo Falsarella with a unique vision: to create an open space where patrons could savor their wines while immersing themselves in the natural surroundings. Inspired by the rural heritage of the Veneto region, the architects proposed a contemporary reinterpretation of the Brolo, a traditional Italian garden typology blending indoor and outdoor spaces.
The Essence of the Brolo
Unlike enclosed tasting rooms, the new Brolo at Cantina Gorgo is an elongated rectangular structure open to the sky, enclosed on the sides to form a central void. This central space serves as the focal point, inviting visitors to gather and admire the landscape while engaging with their surroundings.
Authenticity in Design
True to the vernacular architecture of the region, the Brolo incorporates rough-hewn stone, reinforced concrete, brushed wood, and rusty iron. These materials not only evoke the raw authenticity of the area but also establish a deep connection with the landscape. The architecture harmonizes with its surroundings, fostering a profound relationship with nature.
A Slow-Paced Experience
In contrast to the fast-paced modern lifestyle, the Brolo offers visitors a tranquil haven where they can reconnect with nature and embrace a slower pace of life. It represents a journey through Italy that celebrates cultural heritage without nostalgia, aiming to revitalize the essence of the Bel paese through contemporary design.
A Vision for the Future
The project embodies a vision for a new Italian architecture that revitalizes vernacular traditions in a modern context. By marrying tradition with innovation, the Brolo della Cantina Gorgo Winery stands as a timeless testament to Italy’s rich architectural heritage and its enduring connection to the land.
