Mayalogili, a Sanskrit term with obscure origins, possibly derived from the root “mā,” meaning “to measure,” embodies the transformative power of transforming ideas into tangible realities. Nestled amidst the serene surroundings of Hyderabad’s picturesque rock formations, this sprawling colony serves as the backdrop for a remarkable architectural endeavor by Nowhere.
Conceptualization
Inspired by the essence of the Telugu movie ‘Maya Bazaar’ and the tale of ‘Maya Sabah’ from the Hindu epic ‘Mahabharata,’ the project endeavors to rekindle the intimate relationship between the inhabitants and nature. Rooted in agrarian traditions, the family sought to create a living space that harmonizes with its environment through innovative material usage.
Creative Material Utilization
The architectural vision manifests in the form of large openings punctuating the solid periphery, where layers of cement yield to hand-plastered lime skins blended with salvaged brick and marble dust. Reclaimed wood replaces aluminum, and discarded materials like stones and earth find new life in external paving. These transformations imbue common materials with renewed significance, offering novel sensory experiences.
Architectural Design
Central to the design is a courtyard atop a rainwater tank, around which public, semi-public, and private spaces converge. A three-story structure culminates in a pavilion enveloped by translucent marble skin, alongside a semi-open shower area enclosed by salvaged bamboo strips. Circulation and glazing serve as tools to provide privacy within the residence.
Environmental Sustainability
The lush landscape surrounding the house offers respite from urbanization, while water bodies create a micro-climate, aiding natural temperature regulation. Harnessing the slopes of the colony, the design incorporates underground water storage tanks, filtering and storing stormwater runoff. Innovative technology facilitates water harvesting from the air, ensuring a sustainable water supply.
Conclusion
Mayalogili stands as a testament to the fusion of vernacular wisdom with contemporary sustainability principles, reimagining traditional architectural paradigms. By embracing openness, transparency, and environmental consciousness, the project transcends the confines of conventional urban living, offering a nurturing sanctuary deeply rooted in its cultural and natural heritage.
